Effect of Uncertainty in the Reliability of the COTS based Hardware System and its Sensitivity Analysis

Abstract: Reliability, environmental conditions, device operating temperature and other stringent conditions puts serious constraint on the use of COTS components in space applications. An approach for assessing the reliability of a COTS components based hardware system is presented. The effect of uncertainty in the failure rates as well as in the reliability estimates on the over all system reliability is discussed. The overall system reliability is estimated considering the certain uncertainty in the failure rate of all components and the maximum and minimum values of system reliability are obtained. Besides, we also present the sensitivity analysis on the reliability of a component-based system in order to determine which of the components affects the reliability of the system most. Sensitivity analysis evaluates the most sensitive component failure rate and also the most sensitive reliability of an individual component. These aspects and necessary calculations are illustrated by considering a sample hardware system.
