Hemisphere Structure Allows Sound Power Measurements

Sound power measurements are increasingly becoming a requirement in a lot of industries. In the automotive world, suppliers have to specify sound power levels for the parts emitting noise. Computer manufacturers are pushing the envelope for quiet products and calling upon their fan, hard disk, component suppliers to deliver even acoustically discrete products.

Moreover, in the white goods industry sound power is becoming increasingly popular, and “silent” products have become a trademark of high end, high quality products.

Noting these trends, GRAS combined years of experience in customer driven innovation with 20 years of experience developing the most robust and reliable microphones to produce an off-the-shelf solution, with all the benefits of a modern dedicated system.

Until now there was no commercially available structures on the market that would suit the needs of these customers – GRAS has with the introduction of the 1 m and 2 m radius products introduced a structure which answers a lot of the questions raised by older or tripod based solutions:

  • Offering easy access to the test area, for quicker turnaround between tests by virtue of the rigid design. Leaving out one side of the hemisphere doesn’t weaken the structure

  • Ensuring very high repeatability by always having equal and precise distance to the center of the structure

  • Trusted data due to negligible reflections from the structure

  • Color coded microphone positions for added simplicity and flexibility

  • Set up time of less than 30 minutes

  • Optional flight case for portable systems – ideal for onsite consultancies

The system caters to GRAS’ world renowned microphones – either standard ˝” free field microphones or low noise 40HL microphones – ensuring that whatever noise level you are interested in capturing, GRAS can provide the appropriate solution.

The synergy of GRAS’ sound power solution and ViAcoustics Trident software is unparalleled and, for the first time, engineers can get a dedicated and affordable system, which will deliver reliable and trusted data every time.
