Linear Position Sensors Improve Filling Process for Packaging Applications

MTS Systems Corp., Sensors Division’s Temposonics® linear-position sensors are instrumental in improving the filling process for facilities that package a wide variety of products. Where a packaging facility once required a complicated, bulky and costly combination scale to switch back and forth between various products during packaging cycles, the MTS linear position sensors are being used in equipment that is more compact and less expensive due to fewer moving parts, as the sensors have replaced a number of other components in the machine. The R-Series sensors also increase the accuracy of fillers to improve consistency and reduce waste. By optimizing machine performance, MTS’ magnetostrictive linear position sensors offer superior accuracy for improved quality control; unparalleled reliability to maintain high productivity; and high-speed performance for faster setup times.

“The R-Series’ superior response and accuracy result in higher machine

performance and product quality while the reliable construction results in reduced maintenance and down time,” said Matt Hankinson, Temposoncis Marketing Manager, MTS. “The sensors are available in a wide range of configurations across a spectrum of performance and cost tradeoffs, whether you need high-speed motion control with diagnostics, reduced complexity and cost for multi-device networks such as DeviceNet, or low-cost, low-profile position sensors.”

The R-Series sensor is a rugged industrial sensor that provides linear, absolute measurement and non-contact sensing technology in a variety of high performance outputs such as SSI, DeviceNet, Profibus, and EtherCAT. With non-linearity less than 0.01% and repeatability within 0.001%, these sensors are ideal for packaging applications that require accuracy, reliability and consistency. For improved protection, theelectronics are double-shield for EMI immunity and available in IP67 or NEMA 4X housings for contamination protection and wash down.

MTS sensors with Temposonics technology have been successfully used in a variety of packaging and automation applications such as filling, sealing, and bag making. For most applications, no adjustments are required for normal sensor installation and operation, but if sensor parameters need to be changed on-site, the sensors are easy to program using one of three options – handheld or cabinet-mounted pushbutton programmers or PC software programming kits depending on the user’s needs.
